Shame on Safeway!

Did you know that when Safeway/Albertsons decides to leave a neighborhood, they sometimes block other grocery stores from opening up in their former locations?

This means that when they are the only grocery store around and leave an area such as a downtown location to move to the suburbs, they include a restriction on that property that states that no other grocery store can move in. Some of these restrictions have been for as long as 15 years!

As part of Food Empowerment Project’s (F.E.P.) work on lack of access to healthy foods in Vallejo, CA, we found that Safeway had moved from a downtown location and relocated to a suburban area. What they did with their former property was outrageous.

This injustice is not limited to California; they have done this in Washington, D.C.; Greeley, CO; and other locations.

The lack of access to healthy foods is a complex issue, and here you have a corporation intentionally impacting the health of communities—primarily communities of color and senior citizens.

We are asking you to join us in an effort to get Safeway to change this unjust provision and pass a corporate policy to cease such harmful practices.

Learn more about the Shame on Safeway campaign in our blog: http://appetiteforjustice.blogspot.com/2016/10/shame-on-safeway.html

What you can do:
  • Sign and share our petition.
  • Call Safeway to complain: 1-877-Safeway (1-877-723-3929).*
  • Order some of our leaflets to share with others by emailing info(at)foodispower.org or get the leaflets or posters printed.
  • Join us by taking a stand in front of your local Safeway (we can send you leaflets and posters). Contact us here for additional details.

Thank you for wanting to take a stand against a corporation that is impacting the health of communities of color and low-income communities.

*Suggested language and details: Please make a polite phone call and keep in mind the person you are speaking to probably has no idea about this policy—most people don’t. You just need to stay on the line for a customer service representative. They will ask you for your full name and phone number and if you have a Safeway card number.

Suggested language: “I am calling to log a comment against a Safeway policy that sometimes puts restrictive deeds on its former properties and prevents other grocery stores from moving in, sometimes for 10 years or more. This has impacted community health. I would like Safeway to end this policy immediately.”

If they ask questions you cannot answer, feel free to provide our email: info(at)foodispower.org and remind them you are calling because you disagree with this practice.
